This 3 day fishing trip (August 20-22, 2015) in the Nootka Sound was definitely memorable for me. I went with my dad, best friend Cody and his father. Nootka Sound is on the northwestern side of Vancouver Island. From Vancouver we took the ferry to Naniamo and drove to Gold River, from there we took a float plane to Nootka Fishing Lodge.

The fishing was OK, but the time with the dads and best friend was what I’ll remember. We caught Chinook & Coho Salmon while cruising beside Humpback whales, Sea Lions, Seals, Eagles, Black Bears. The weather couldn’t have been better as it was sunny and T-shirt weather. See the gallery at the bottom for the photos/highlights, including my personal best Chinook weighed in at 23 lbs.

We trolled herring under various colors of flashers (green, red and purple). I don’t recall the specifics of the Saltwater tackle. Salt tackle is new to me at this point, so can’t offer much detail here.

On one of the rods (we usually had 3-4 going at one time), our guide always deep trolled a huge rectangle sized silver spoon. On the 2nd day of the trip that rod went off and we fought and lost a massive fish (likely Tyee Chinook).

Water Conditions: Summer like conditions. Air temperature was between 20-28 degrees for the entire trip.
